The elephant-like rush by the GHA to reduce the concierge service and thereby the quality of life for tenants housed in Glasgow's numerous tower-blocks has been halted by the actions of a campaign fronted by Sean Clerkin and other members of the Glasgow Save Our Homes Committee. Removal of this vital service was to have been piloted in Red Road, Sighthill and Mitchellhill flats, before being rolled out across the city.

This tactic would serve only to increase anxiety among the remaining tenants and had a high impact upon those particularly at risk. The possible intent being that they would be forced by fear and intimidation to leave homes that some residents have had for approaching forty years .

Council House Shortage Concerns
Tenement Houses In Glasgow Right to buy legislation is making a 'significant' impact on the numbers of council houses available for rent in the Falkirk area, officials have warned. An average of 635 houses per year have been sold between 2000 and last year, with sales estimated to continue at as many as 550 per year. A report by Falkirk Council Housing and social work chiefs said the trends could lead to a shortfall of rented houses.

A number of rural councils have approached the Scottish Executive with proposals to suspend the present homeowner's 'right-to-buy' arrangements.

Unions Claim Glasgow Tenants Put At Risk
Red Road - Pilot Area for Reduction in Concierge Service Thousands of tenants in Glasgow may be at risk after changes to the city's social housing sector, according to one of Scotland's biggest unions.

The GMB has criticised Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) for perceived cutbacks to the caretaker service in towerblocks.

Officials said GHA had broken promises to have at least two concierge on duty at all times, risking tenant's safety.

GHA said it was still fine-tuning the service and health & safety remained a central priority.
